Top Maoist Leader Misir Besra Reportedly Arrested Along with Five Associates in Dhanbad

 

Deepak Mishra, Jharkhand Spirit : In what could be one of the biggest breakthroughs in India's anti-Naxal operations, Misir Besra, a Politburo member of the banned CPI (Maoist) and a wanted Maoist leader carrying a reward of ₹1 crore, has reportedly been arrested along with five of his associates in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. Official confirmation from the security agencies is still awaited.

According to preliminary media reports, Besra is currently being interrogated under tight security. His arrest, if officially confirmed, would mark a significant milestone in the country's long-running campaign against Left-Wing Extremism.

A native of Madanadih village in the Pirtand block of Giridih district, Besra had remained one of the most wanted Maoist leaders for several years. He was allegedly involved in directing Maoist activities across Jharkhand and neighbouring states and had been on the radar of multiple state police forces and central security agencies.

Security agencies had launched extensive operations over the years to trace him. Reports suggest that efforts had also been made to persuade him to surrender through his family members, but he had continued to evade arrest.

The reported arrest comes at a time when the Maoist movement has witnessed a steady decline in Jharkhand. Several senior Maoist leaders have either been killed, arrested or have surrendered in recent years, considerably weakening the organisation's operational strength.

Only a few days ago, security forces arrested Ajay Mahto, a key commander of Misir Besra's squad who carried a reward of ₹25 lakh. Following his arrest, his wife, who was also associated with the Maoist organisation, surrendered before the authorities.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has repeatedly stated that India is moving towards the complete elimination of Left-Wing Extremism. However, Misir Besra had remained one of the biggest challenges for security agencies due to his long underground career and influence within the banned outfit.
