| Way to Parasnath Hill |
Deepak Mishra, Jharkhand Spirit : It is four o'clock in the morning. A thin blanket of clouds drifts across the upper slopes of Parasnath Hill. From the temples of Madhuban, the soothing chants of the Namokar Mantra and Jain devotional hymns echo through the valley, filling the air with a deep sense of spirituality.
As pilgrims begin their ascent, the sacred chants remain audible for a while before gradually fading into the silence of the forest. Soon, the rhythmic tapping of walking sticks, the conversations of palanquin bearers, and the sounds of nature become the only companions on the trail.
At the same time, groups of young trekkers prepare their cameras to capture the first rays of the rising sun. On one side are barefoot Jain pilgrims, climbing the hill with unwavering devotion in search of spiritual merit and inner peace. On the other are nature lovers and adventure seekers, eager to experience the beauty and challenge of Jharkhand's highest peak.
One mountain, one trail, two different journeys
This is not an unusual scene but an everyday morning on Parasnath Hill. It is perhaps the only place where spirituality and adventure blend so naturally. Here, people from entirely different backgrounds share the same path—one seeking liberation of the soul, the other seeking the thrill of exploration. Faith and adventure truly walk side by side on the same trail.
A Sacred Mountain of Jainism
Parasnath Hill, the highest hill in the Indian state of Jharkhand, is one of the holiest pilgrimage destinations in Jainism. Revered as Shikharji, it is believed to be the place where 20 of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras, along with countless Jain monks, attained Nirvana (moksha).
According to Jain scriptures, even a single pilgrimage to this sacred mountain is considered immensely auspicious. It is believed that one who performs the pilgrimage with sincere devotion is freed from lower rebirths and progresses on the path toward spiritual liberation.
The hill is home to the sacred Tonks dedicated to all twenty-four Tirthankaras, each marked by revered footprints. Pilgrims also visit the serene Jal Mandir and the magnificent temples dedicated to Lord Parshvanath, with the principal shrine located at the highest point of the mountain.
A Rising Destination for Nature Lovers
While Parasnath Hill has been a centre of faith for centuries, it has increasingly become a favourite destination for trekkers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.
The influence of social media has played a significant role in introducing the mountain's breathtaking landscapes to a wider audience. Every weekend, groups of young visitors from Dhanbad, Bokaro, Ranchi, Kolkata, and other nearby cities arrive to witness the sunrise, trek through dense forests, enjoy panoramic valley views, and experience the unique combination of wilderness and spirituality.
Unlike many trekking destinations, Parasnath offers visitors an experience where natural beauty coexists with profound religious significance.
More Than Just a Climb
For local residents, the journey to the summit—rising about 4,480 feet (1,365 metres) above sea level—is much more than a physical climb.
For some, it is a pilgrimage undertaken with hopes of attaining spiritual merit. For others, it is a peaceful escape into nature. Many come simply to test their endurance and determination.
