| Police officials address a press conference at Pirtand Police Station |
According
to the police, the victim's father, Hriday
Narayan Singh (72), a resident of Siyaranghi village under Pirtand
police station in Giridih district, had lodged a complaint on July 1, 2026, stating that his son, Shankar Kumar Singh alias Bindu Singh,
had left home on June 20 after
saying he was returning from Giridih but never came back. The complainant also
expressed suspicion that his son had been abducted by a woman named Soniya and others. Based on the
complaint, Pirtand Police registered an abduction case and
launched an investigation.
Taking
the matter seriously, Giridih
Superintendent of Police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the
leadership of Dumri SDPO Abid Khan.
During the investigation, police relied on both human intelligence and
technical evidence. The woman named in the FIR was brought from Prayagraj,
Uttar Pradesh, while another suspect, Chandan
Kumar Bhokta, was called for questioning from his native village in
Deoghar district.
During
sustained interrogation, Chandan Kumar Bhokta allegedly confessed to the crime.
Police said the accused revealed that he was under pressure to arrange the
victim's marriage with the woman, but members of his in-laws' family opposed
the proposal because the woman was already married and the mother of three
children, though she had been living separately from her husband.
According
to the confession, the accused lured Shankar Kumar Singh to Dhanbad on a
motorcycle on the pretext of meeting the woman. He allegedly took the victim to
a forest in the Basaha area under Tundi police station, where he attacked him
with a stone and then strangled him with a gamchha ( towel), resulting in his death.
Acting on
the accused's disclosure, the SIT recovered the victim's skeletal remains from the forest.
Police also seized several items believed to be linked to the crime, including
the orange-coloured gamcha allegedly used in the murder, the victim's clothes
and footwear, the accused's mobile phone, and a knife recovered near the crime
scene.
The
arrested accused has been identified as Chandan
Kumar Bhokta (32), son of Kali Prasad Bhokta, a resident of Sirsa
village under Pathrol Police Station in Deoghar district. The investigation was
carried out by the SIT led by SDPO Abid Khan, with the support of Dumri Circle
Inspector Rajendra Prasad, Jitendra Kumar Singh officer incharge Pirtand Police Station, the district
technical branch, and armed police personnel.
