another major success for the anti-Naxal campaign in Jharkhand, Anita Kisku alias Babita alias Babita Kumari
alias Babita Devi, an Area
Committee Member of the banned CPI (Maoist), surrendered before Giridih Superintendent of Police Dr. Bimal
Kumar on Tuesday under the Jharkhand Government's rehabilitation policy,
"Nayi Disha – Ek Nayi Pahal." The surrender took place in the
presence of senior police officials, including Additional SP Surjeet Kumar.
Babita is
the wife of Ajay Mahto alias Tiger,
the ₹25 lakh reward Maoist commander who was arrested by Giridih Police and the
CRPF's CoBRA Battalion in a joint anti-Naxal operation a few days ago. Police
believe her surrender is another significant setback for the Maoist network
operating in the Parasnath region.
Joined Maoists in 2009
According
to police, Anita Kisku, around 30 years old and educated up to Class IV, joined
the Maoist movement in 2009 after coming into contact with members of
the banned outfit. She later worked under several senior Maoist leaders before
marrying Ajay Mahto in 2017 in a forest area near Madhuban.
As an
Area Committee Member, she was active in the Parasnath, Lugu Pahad, Jhumra Pahad and Kolhan regions. Police
said she assisted the outfit in hiding weapons and explosives, collecting
extortion money, creating fear among villagers, and supporting attacks on
civilians and security forces. Her dedication eventually earned her a key
organisational role within the CPI (Maoist).
Why She Decided to Surrender
The press
release states that Anita gradually became disillusioned with the functioning
of the Maoist organisation. She allegedly witnessed exploitation of lower-rung
cadres by senior leaders and increasing violence against innocent villagers.
Following
intensified anti-Naxal operations by security forces and the recent arrest of
her husband Ajay Mahto, her morale weakened. After discussions with her family
and assurances from Giridih Police regarding fair treatment and rehabilitation,
she decided to voluntarily surrender and rejoin mainstream society under the
state's surrender and rehabilitation policy.
Several Criminal Cases Registered
Police
said Anita Kisku is named in multiple
criminal cases registered across Jharkhand, including Giridih, Chaibasa
and other districts. The cases relate to offences under the Arms Act,
Explosives Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), attacks on
security personnel, extortion and other Maoist-related activities.
Police Call It a Major Success
Giridih
Police described the surrender as another important achievement in the ongoing
campaign to eliminate Maoist activities from the district. Officials said
Babita's return to the mainstream is expected to encourage other Maoist cadres
to surrender and take advantage of the Jharkhand Government's rehabilitation
policy.
Police
also highlighted that Giridih has witnessed several successful surrenders of
Maoists over the past two years and appealed to remaining members of the banned
organisation to abandon violence and join the mainstream through the "Nayi
Disha – Ek Nayi Pahal" programme.
