Deepak Mishra, Jharkhand Spirit : Leaders and workers of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) staged a protest in Giridih on Thursday, condemning the alleged police action against students demonstrating at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The protesters also demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the issue.
The demonstration began with a procession from the JMM district office, where party workers, joined by members of the Jharkhand Chhatra Morcha, marched through the town raising slogans before assembling at Tower Chowk. The protesters later burnt an effigy of the Central Government as a mark of protest.
Addressing the gathering, JMM district president Sanjay Singh alleged that while the BJP promotes the slogan "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao," women students participating in the demonstration at Jantar Mantar were subjected to inappropriate treatment by the police. He claimed that the incident had sparked widespread resentment and asserted that peaceful protest is a constitutional right in a democracy.
Singh warned that if justice was not delivered to the protesting students, the party would intensify its agitation through a phased movement.
Mayor Pramila Mehra said that any injustice against women would be strongly opposed, while former Jamua MLA Kedar Hazra described the reported incident at Jantar Mantar as deeply unfortunate.
Several senior JMM leaders and office-bearers, including district secretary Mahalal Soren, district vice-president Ajit Kumar Pappu, youth wing president Kaleshwar Soren, district spokesperson Krishna Murari Sharma, town president Rakesh Kumar Rocky, student wing president Abhay Kumar, women's wing leader Pramila Kumari, and hundreds of party workers participated in the protest.
