Toddler’s Body Recovered 16 Hours After Being Swept Away in Drain in Giridih

Jharkhand Spirit,Giridih : In a heart-wrenching incident, the body of a two-and-a-half-year-old boy, identified as Ankush Thakur, son of Deepak Thakur, was recovered 16 hours after he was swept away by strong drain currents in Giridih town. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening in Mangrodih under Muffasil police station area.

According to eyewitnesses, Ankush had accompanied his parents to the local market. Around 7 p.m., as heavy rains lashed the area, he slipped from his mother’s hands while trying to take shelter from the downpour. The child fell into an open drain and was carried away by the strong water flow.

After an extensive search operation, the child’s body was finally recovered on Sunday morning near Babantoli Mod. The recovery sparked grief and anger among locals. Agitated residents blocked the Bada Chowk on Sunday morning, demanding accountability and immediate preventive measures from the authorities.

The district administration swung into action soon after. Deputy Commissioner, SDPO, SDM, and other officials reached the spot to pacify the protesting crowd. Police and municipal staff also joined the rescue efforts, removing slabs covering the drain with the help of a JCB machine to aid the search.

Meanwhile, the grief-stricken family and relatives of Ankush were inconsolable. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as crowds gathered near Gandhi Chowk and Bada Chowk during the search operation.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of open and uncovered drains in Giridih town, especially during the monsoon season when heavy rains lead to dangerous waterlogging and strong currents.
