Mobile Addiction: A Growing Threat to Children

Jharkhand Spirit, Deepak Mishra :  Recently, I witnessed something that left me deeply concerned. A five-year-old girl from my relative’s family had been watching videos on a mobile phone for almost four continuous hours. What surprised me even more was that her parents did not say a single word to stop her or even try to interrupt her.

When it was time for her to go to school, she began making excuses and refused to go. After having lunch, instead of studying or playing, she once again picked up the mobile and started watching reels endlessly.

An old lady of the house, noticing all this, softly remarked that this habit could spoil the child and that it was not good for her future. To my surprise, instead of understanding the concern, the parents defended their child, saying, “She is a modern-era baby and is learning a lot of things from mobile.”

I chose to remain silent at that moment because I knew they wouldn’t understand what is truly happening. But deep inside, I felt disturbed. This blind trust in digital devices is slowly becoming a serious threat to our children’s mental, physical, and emotional growth.

Mobile addiction is not just a habit anymore—it is becoming a complicated problem that can damage a child’s ability to focus, play, learn, and socialize. Childhood is the time to explore the world, ask questions, play in the mud, run under the sun, and learn through real-life experiences—not just from glowing screens.

Every parent needs to understand this and take responsibility. It is important to prepare a proper timetable for children that balances study, physical activities, hobbies, and screen time. Giving them limited and meaningful exposure to technology under supervision is fine, but letting them spend their entire childhood on mobile screens is not.

Let us not forget: gadgets can be good teachers, but they can never replace the real world. It’s our duty to guide our children before this silent addiction steals their innocence.
